In February 1985, the Uehara Memorial Foundation was established as a 70th anniversary project of Taisho Pharmaceutical to commemorate the footsteps of our honorary chairman, the late Shokichi Uehara. The objective of the Uehara Memorial Foundation is to promote research in pharmaceutical development and other life science fields to enhance people’s lives and welfare.
The foundation’s activities have included research grants for professional life science researchers, grants for overseas study, and the Uehara Prize, an award recognizing research accomplishments. Additionally, it supports international symposiums on life sciences held in Japan through grants and other forms of assistance. The foundation has provided more than 11,500 grants and other forms of assistance totaling approximately ¥37.1 billion.

Additionally, the symposium included presentations from the 11th Designated Research Project, "Big Data-Driven Approaches with AI in Life Sciences."

The 2023 Uehara Prize was awarded to two doctors, Dr. Takeshi Iwatsubo for the research theme "The molecular pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative disorders and the development of therapeutic drugs," and Dr. Hiroyoshi Nishikawa for the research theme "The mechanisms of immune suppression caused by oncogenic abnormalities and their application in cancer treatment."
After the presentation ceremony, they gave their speeches, which were streamed online.
