At Taisho Pharmaceutical, we have established a comprehensive waste management system. This includes appointing a Chief Waste Management Officer responsible for overall supervision, as well as Waste Management Officers and personnel at each business location. These individuals communicate regularly to ensure consistent adherence to management rules across all 12 business locations. The foundation of this system is the "Industrial Waste Management Regulations," which outline the broad waste management rules based on relevant laws and regulations. Each business location then formulates detailed rules based on these regulations.

As much as possible, we try to reuse and recycle waste from our business activities after separating it, let alone reducing waste (3R*1).
In particular, the production headquarters generates 70% of the waste from Taisho Pharmaceutical. For this reason, the headquarters sets targets under its environmental management system*2.
In recent years, marine contamination with plastic waste has posed a problem globally. Taisho Pharmaceutical reduces the use of plastics for purposes such as product packaging and promotes recycling through outside companies.

Materials such as paper and plastic packaging become waste after they are received by a customer. Transporting and treating such materials already has a negative impact on the environment.
Consequently, we are trying to design our packaging to lessen the impact.

We review our product packaging in an effort to reduce our environmental impact.
In recent years, for example, we did away with the package insert for TAISHO STOMACH MEDICINE K. Now the explanation and precautions are printed on the paper package. Of course, this helped reduce waste. We also received feedback from customers who appreciated the availability of a package insert, which they had tended to lose, on the package.
We also exercise ingenuity in many different ways. Examples are simplifying the printing of outer boxes for transportation and changing the package size to reduce energy use and CO2 emissions accompanying transportation.

To recycle containers and packaging held by our customers, a collection system is necessary. Since it is challenging for Taisho Pharmaceutical to achieve this alone, we fulfill our obligations as a business by outsourcing the recycling process to an external organization, the Japan Containers and Packaging Recycling Association (JCPRA).
The Association cooperates with recycling companies and collects and recycles glass bottles, paper and plastic packages.

Lipovitan, one of our staple health drink series, also conveys our ingenious efforts in many different aspects to reduce our environmental impact.
The brownish bottle for Lipovitan D was 113 grams in weight in the past. Now it is 10 grams lighter. This helps to achieve greater resources savings and to reduce the consumption of energy in transportation. We have reduced the environmental impact in all stages including the manufacturing, transportation and disposal of a bottle. In fact, we enable customers to reduce waste by themselves.
We reduced paper consumption by abolishing corrugated partitions for ten-bottle packages. Labels and aluminum caps, which were conventionally disposed of, are recycled into toilet paper and aluminum metal, respectively.

Water resources are essential to manufacturing pharmaceuticals. Drought, water shortages due to excessive use, water pollution, and other situations have a significant impact on business. We use tools*3 provided by external organizations to check the water risks at each manufacturing site.
In addition to working to conserve water by recycling used water, we also strictly manage the quality of wastewater, and we operate our business with care to ensure that precious water does not dry up or become polluted.

Notes and Additional Information
*1 The 3Rs refer to Reduce (minimizing waste generation), Reuse (using items again), and Recycle (processing materials for reuse).
*2 Environmental management system: A system for business enterprises, etc. to promote their environmental initiatives. It defines matters such as what kind of organization or person should be involved, the rules they should follow and the goals they should seek to achieve.
*3 To check for water risks, Taisho Pharmaceutical uses Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas provided by World Resources Institute (WRI), and the Ministry of the Environment's National Ground Environment Directory.
