Approximately 60% of the CO2 emissions from Taisho Pharmaceutical are generated by our factories, where energy consumption is also concentrated. Therefore, implementing measures such as introducing the latest production equipment is crucial. We regularly update our production facilities, selecting equipment that prioritizes energy efficiency and CO2 reduction whenever possible.

For example, by converting air conditioning systems and pumps to inverter types, we prevent excessive motor rotation. Additionally, we reduce CO2 emissions by switching to high-efficiency refrigeration units, converting energy sources (from city gas to electricity), and recovering waste heat.

Additionally, a significant amount of energy is consumed when transporting products by truck. Therefore, we are working on "modal shift" initiatives to switch to transportation methods with lower energy consumption, such as ships and railways, and improving fuel efficiency.

Omiya Factory, Hanyu Factory, and Comprehensive Research Institute are located in Saitama Prefecture. These facilities consume about 70% of the energy used by Taisho Pharmaceutical domestically and emit over 30,000 tons of CO2. These factories and research institutes are particularly focused on energy conservation and CO2 reduction to meet regulatory targets. Through initiatives such as introducing energy-efficient equipment, we are gradually reducing emissions.

Additionally, we participate in the "Carbon Neutral Action Plan" of the Japan Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (JPMA), an industry organization. We are working together to prevent global warming while responding to various societal demands.

Curbing fluorocarbon emissions

Curbing fluorocarbon emissions

Although chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), once widely used as refrigerants in air conditioners and refrigerators, are a type of greenhouse gas, our factories rarely emit CFCs directly. However, there is a risk of CFC leakage during the malfunction or replacement of old air conditioners. Therefore, we have established a comprehensive management system for equipment using CFCs across the company. We have appointed a chief management officer and designated management officers and managers at each site to systematically manage these substances.

Notes and Additional Information
*1 Scopes 1 and 2: CO2 emissions are generally categorized into Scope 1, 2, and 3 based on their sources. Scope 1 refers to CO2 directly emitted from the company through activities such as fuel combustion. Scope 2 refers to CO2 indirectly emitted through the use of electricity and other energy purchased from other companies. Scope 3 encompasses CO2 emissions from the entire supply chain, excluding those covered by Scope 1 and 2.

*2 The calculation formula is as follows:
Factories and Research Facilities: Energy consumption (kL) / Number of units produced (hundreds of millions) or Production value (hundreds of millions of yen) × Total floor area (m²)
Office-based Business Locations: Energy consumption (kL) / Total floor area (m²)

*3 A-class or higher in the evaluation system by class under the Act on Rationalization of Energy Use and Shift to Non-fossil Energy: The Act classifies companies and organizations into four classes including S, A, B and C depending on the degree of achievement of energy saving. Companies in A-class are deemed as making a certain level of effort and are expected to try even more.
