Taisho Pharmaceutical Realizes Zero Waste Emission at Hanyu Factory

Taisho Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. (President: Akira Uehara) has proactively promoted recycling and reduction of material packaging and other wastes, seeking to achieve zero waste emission* at all its factories in Japan (in Omiya, Hanyu and Okayama) by FY2008. At the end of FY2003, it successfully achieved the goal at Hanyu Factory (Komatsudai, Hanyu City, Saitama; Superintendent: Yoichi Muraoka), the early accomplishment of which is expected to be equaled by the Omiya Factory within FY2004 and at Okayama next fiscal year.

Taisho Pharmaceutical regards environmental measures as one of its top managerial priorities. Since 2001, it has implemented 3R (Reduction, Reuse and Recycling) environmental activities on the wastes generated through its manufacturing processes, involving all its employees, thereby contributing to the realization of a recycling-oriented society.

*Zero waste emission refers to the optimal minimization of waste generated by industrial operations through recycling. The activity is designed to achieve efficient use of valuable global resources.
The definition of zero waste emission at Taisho Pharmaceutical is:
To control the final disposal (landfill) amount of industrial and office wastes from operating sites to below 0.5% of the total waste generation. The landfill amount does not include the waste channeled to thermal recycling. "Wastes" do not include plant and office effluents, or returns to suppliers.

Outline of Hanyu Factory
A plant dedicated to the production of nutrient drinks, including Lipovitan D, located inside the Komatsudai Industrial Complex in the rural area of Hanyu City, Saitama. Since the plant effluent flows into the Tone River, water of which is used for farming, we place stringent quality control over our effluent with a purification system that even makes it drinkable.

- Outline of recycling
Taisho Pharmaceutical aims at higher levels of recycling, by prioritizing material recycling (the collection and reuse of waste as raw materials for new products) before thermal recycling (the collection and reuse of waste by burning them as a source of thermal energy generation).
- Thorough classification for waste recycling
Thorough classification is implemented at production lines and in offices, to facilitate smooth collection and recycling of wastes.
